Bach Christmas Oratorio – Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra
Perhaps unexpectedly, this performance belonged to the Evangelist, the young English tenor Samuel Boden, who certainly had the most work out of the four soloists.  His performance was so excellent that it is well worth highlighting.  It is rare to hear the role of Evangelist sung so clearly that one feels it totally unnecessary to follow the text in the programme booklet.  So it was here.  A sense of great reassurance was afforded to the listener as a result of the quality of his intonation and euphonic sound - here everything was in place.  The indescribably difficult aria in Cantata no. 2, Frohe Hirten, with solo flute was seemingly effortless, despite its fiendish runs sung at a breakneck pace.
